The boys and I ventured out to Tinchi Tamba Wetlands Reserve late this afternoon for a little bushwalk. We ended up at the bird hide overlooking Bald Hills Creek. Along the way we saw dozens of kangaroos. The mozzies were out in force but we had a great arvo exploring! I’ve been working long hours on the bus lately and am conscious of the need to strike a balance between getting the bus project finished and enjoying some adventures with the boys. We are all at our happiest when immersed in nature. It was a wonderful afternoon together walking, talking, learning and laughing. ~ Keiran.

It’s back to work in Bronte the Bus! After spending the past week and a half getting old Alice the Bus ready for her new owners, it was nice to get back into Bronte this week to continue with our current project! I’ve been working on completing the main bedroom for the last two days. The bed and bookshelves are now taking shape. And the pine timbers around the windows are nearly complete. With Bronte now parked in our side yard, the bus is sitting on level ground at long last! We are aiming to complete the main bedroom over the coming weekend. We’re pretty happy with the results so far.

A fond farewell to our beloved Alice the Bus today. After 16 years, it was sad to see her go but we’re slightly relieved to be downsizing our fleet and can now focus on getting our new project in Bronte the Bus completed. Alice got to ride in style today (probably faster than she’s ever travelled before) and will enjoy her retirement as a permanent dwelling for a lucky new owner in the country. Bon voyage Alice! Bronte and Alice. A ‘new and old bus’ fleet shot from today! It’s been a while since our last post but we’ve been super busy! We sold Alice the Bus last weekend and I have spent this entire week under that bus (in sweltering summer weather) carrying out repairs and getting the old bus moving again. It’s been over four years since Alice was started and run, so there were multiple complications to overcome before she would budge. But we got there late today! Alice is now parked up on the street and awaiting a ride on a low loader this week to the country, where she will start a new life as a permanent onsite house for her new owners. It was great to drive the old girl one last time (even if only from the side yard to the road). And the whole street came out to watch the excitement and cheer old Alice on! Worked the night shift in Bronte the bus tonight. We’ve now applied two coats of a liming white ‘stain and varnish’ to the plywood walls. Just a clear coat of varnish to go and then we can move the furniture back into position for fixing permanently. Whilst there are a million things still to do in the bus, it feels exciting to see our future home starting to take shape. ~ Keiran.

We started building our kitchen benches and cupboards today! It’s been a busy weekend with lots of odd jobs completed on the bus. We’ve done some more waterproofing after discovering two unresolved leaks in the bus after yesterday’s rain. We’ve started sealing the plywood walls with a clear coat, although we’re now contemplating a subtle coat or two of stain and varnish (liming white). And tonight I applied the first of two coats of white ceiling paint throughout the bus. It’s progress on many different fronts at the moment!

Bunk beds be built in Bronte the bus!
Well okay, they’re not quite finished yet. We still need to secure them to the walls, floor and ceiling. And the bunks will have plywood walls at each end, with some sort of plywood section with foot holes along part of the side (for ladder and cubby house). But the bones are built and we’re pretty happy with that! ~ Keiran.

We’re stoked with how the interior walls are coming along. Our original plan was to paint the interior walls (except the pine timbers around each window) but we’re really liking the raw plywood look. It’s been slow going, as we’re finalising electrical plans as we go (so that we can run the wiring inside the walls). We’re planning to finish off the nearside wall today and get started on the bunk beds. Very exciting! Have a great weekend everyone!

We ran the starter batteries flat a few weeks ago (after too many nights running the saloon lights whilst working in the bus). The batteries were removed for a good slow charge. It was a great opportunity to clean up the battery storage tray, treat some rust and repaint the whole thing (the photos here were taken before the clean up and repaint). The batteries have now been reinstalled and Bronte the bus is ready for action again! ~ Keiran.

Today’s progress report. The master bedroom is beginning to take shape now. I have started fixing the 3mm plywood wall sheets into place. The 24v wiring for lights and USB charging sockets is also being rolled out (behind the wall sheets). And the shelves on the rear wall are coming along nicely. We have decided to install a 2.5kW split system air conditioner in the bus and this will be mounted on the rear wall (above the shelves). A productive day in Bronte the bus! ~ Keiran.

There’s something very satisfying about watching timelapse video of the project taking shape! The last of the insulation was installed over the weekend. We’ve got 50mm polystyrene in the walls, an air gap, then a three-in-one foil insulation stapled into place. Pine battens and 3mm plywood are going on next to complete the walls. We’ve also finished installing exterior vents for the fridge and ‘rangehood’ (a 24v computer fan mounted in the wall), and added the power inlet and access holes for exterior sensor and annex lights. A productive weekend (despite the super hot #Brisbane weather)! ~ Keiran.

A general progress report. Lots of work with insulation, windows and walls. We’re finally also getting started with building the furniture and it’s super exciting. This is the beginning of the main bedroom (queen bed and book shelves at rear). We’re planning to insulate under the bed (as it’s situated above the engine). The bus starter batteries have been removed for a good charge and the battery box treated for rust. We’ve also been busy online buying electrical components like power points (double pole), usb charging sockets and exterior sensor lights. We’re kind of all over the place but definitely moving in the right direction with the project. Bronte the bus waiting patiently for the big adventure. We’ve now installed six sliding windows and have been busy completing the wall insulation inside. We’ve also spent many hours waterproofing the exterior of the bus (it leaked like a sieve) and have applied a waterproof membrane around all glazing and body joints from the windows up. With rain falling since the waterproofing was applied, we’re calling it a success. There are no leaks in the bus anymore! On a side note, we’ve still got to apply some black automotive vinyl to the second last window to cover up the polystyrene insulation that’s inside.
