A beautiful warm sunny winter's day here. It was a work day for Sam. I did our washing, cleaned the house and watered our house plants and veggies. The boys and I went for a long hike before lunch exploring Baldy Top and the surrounding landscape. In the late afternoon Sam joined us as we climbed another red rocky formation called Table Top to catch the sunset. There is something so very beautiful about this landscape.

We've been renting this beautiful property near #Charleville and living in our bus at the front gate of the homestead (which is hidden in this picture by the lush gardens that surround the house). Believe it or not, the rent was cheaper than most caravan parks that we've stayed at on the east coast. We've had to maintain the homestead gardens and take care of the property, but it has been a very satisfying experience. We've grown vegetables, the boys have turned the empty house into Lego World and we've enjoyed daily sunset walks along the nearby river. Now that travel restrictions are beginning to ease, we've decided to hit the road again in two weeks' time. It will be strange to leave our quiet little oasis in the outback and to re-enter the world again. But we're planning on seeking out some quiet bush camps further west, so we'll be easing back into things again!

Mondays are usually reserved for maths in 'bus school' but yesterday we mixed things up a bit. In the morning the boys and I went for a long walk and conducted a bird survey along the river, then started reading a new library book written by Anangu about Maralinga (where the British government conducted its atomic bomb testing in the 1950s). We had the choice of quiet reading or audio books over lunch. And some Lego construction and home economics (folding washing and putting it away) in the afternoon. The day finished with a bike ride to the river again in the late afternoon, with Sam joining us when she finished her long working day just before sunset. Not a bad way to start the week!
A special welcome to my new Instagram followers after Sunday's news story about our isolation in the outback on @abcbrisbane by @shelley_lloyd_bris! Thanks for the kind words and comments everyone.

Our favourite place to be in the late afternoon. Down by the river…

Our favourite place to be in the late afternoon. Down by the river at the back of the property. We've all started keeping bird lists and our pages are filling quickly. We've spotted whistling kites, a brown falcon nesting across the river, a wedgetailed eagle outside the front gate, mallee ringnecks, a forest kingfisher, a noisy family of white-winged choughs, peaceful doves and diamond doves, to name but a few!#buslife #outbackqueensland #outback #homeschool #nature

Tending the fire. One of our favourite pastimes of life on the road!

Tending the fire. One of our favourite pastimes of life on the road! Before hunkering down at our current location, we spent a few weeks free-camping by the weir at #Mitchell. This friendly little town is a wonderful place to stay. The locals recognise the value in welcoming travellers and we were sure to spend our dollars in many of the town's businesses. I even bought a new akubra at the local outfitters! Travelling lonely outback highways in my first bus a decade ago. This is one of two images that I keep focused on in my mind for motivation when the going gets tough with our current bus conversion project. I spent many years living in the desert at Uluru and just love the wide open spaces and the beauty of outback Australia. And I can't wait to be exploring this magical landscape with my family in Bronte the bus. We've been building now for thirteen months and I'm feeling both physically and mentally exhausted. But we're on track to be living in the bus early in the new year. There are still a few big jobs in the bus to tick off before we can hit the road and travel outback highways like this. We've got to fit the fresh water tanks (540L) and grey water tanks (150L), set up the composting toilet and install an entire solar power system. We've also got to sort through and minimalise our possessions and sell our house. But I can definitely see a faint light (of sorts) at the end of the tunnel. And I've got my eyes fixed firmly on the prize. ~ Keiran.

Flashback to an epic solo roadtrip in my first house on wheels - Alice the bus. It was in January 2009 and a very hot Australian summer. After many years living at Uluru in the Northern Territory, I packed up and drove Alice back to Queensland via some of my favourite outback roads in South Australia and New South Wales. Alice kept overheating so there were frequent stops, a couple of breakdowns and more flat tyres than I care to remember! But what an incredible adventure. We sold Alice the bus earlier this year to make room in the yard for Bronte the bus. I can't wait to travel these roads again but this time in Bronte and with my family. Not long now!
