We've been working whenever possible on the bus and are starting to see some good progress. The YouTube videos however have been a little slower to publish. Having removed two of the fixed windows earlier this week, we have now put in some timber framing in preparation for the replacement cladding (aluminium composite panel). We'll then be inserting sliding windows into these new panels. It was another stormy day in Brisbane (hence the tarps over the window spaces this afternoon). You may also have noticed that we've swapped out the old school bus seats for some coach seats with lap sash belts (from an old Greyhound bus). It's very much a standard bus conversion layout (there's only so many ways to build a house in a space like this). We have tried to maximise the available space for work, creativity, study and play. There's a computer desk in the main bedroom and a breakfast bar that extends from the kitchen to the front of the bus, creating a long work bench area for all purposes (sitting or standing). The couch in the living area will have toy storage underneath, with the couch cushions removable to create a low table area for playing. A major design constraint were the top hopper windows that open inwards. To keep all windows available for use, we've had to align the floor plan carefully with these openings. One of the greatest challenges for a project like this is finding the time to actually work on the bus (in between earning money to spend on the project, raising young children and all the usual responsibilities of running a family household). I've done a couple of nights lately working on the bus (quiet jobs only) and would probably do more if the bus wasn't parked on the street! I often daydream about renting an industrial warehouse or a property on acreage to get the bus built. In that time, the seats and bag racks have been removed. And now we're busy planning the interior. I've measured the bus up and have been playing around with some online design tools. Sam and I have also marked out some design ideas in the bus with masking tape. The bus interior space measures 12 metres long by 2.4 metres wide, which includes the front door steps and driver's area. As an empty shell, it looks like an incredible amount of space. But start mapping out the essential features for a family of four (beds, storage, shower/toilet, kitchen, couch, all-purpose table, and forward facing seats when travelling) and you soon realise how challenging the task is. We want to create a comfortable space that is functional but not cluttered or cramped. We want to maximise natural lighting with the existing windows and also ensure that all the top hopper windows (that open inwards) can be accessed. We've decided to remove some of the fixed glazing (bonded windows) and will replace with large sliding windows to improve ventilation and reduce interior temperatures.
