Sunset over Bronte the bus tonight. The weather has been unsettled for a few days now with heavy rain today, so there hasn’t been much ‘physical’ progress on the bus. Instead we’ve been reviewing our (ever-dwindling) budget, getting quotes for materials and working on the design of our floorplan. Just waiting for the final coat of paint to dry on the frame around the window opening. And then we’re ready to glue the new window in!

Episode 3 – Tales From The Wild

We’re making little videos of our bus conversion project Tales From The Wild. Here’s Episode 3. The seats are out. The bag racks have been removed. The floor heaters are gone. We’ve started planning the layout. And removed one of the fixed windows, ready to install the first custom sliding window (we’re planning to add 4 or 5 of these).

Note: After initially planning to leave the ceiling alone (you’ll see that we actually started painted it in this video), we have since decided to rip the ceiling out and put some insulation in. It is just too hot in the bus for our liking (despite top hopper windows that open). To my dismay, I have discovered that the metal ceiling panels are not only riveted but glued to the framework above the window line (making the ceiling extra fun to remove). The rivets are no worries. But the glue has formed any incredibly strong bond between ceiling and frame (particularly one long bead above the windows). Has anyone got any tips for gaining the upper hand? I’m currently using hammer and chisel, stanley knife, multi-tool and reciprocating saw to try and prise the ceiling panels from the frame.

Burning the midnight oil in Bronte the bus. One of the greatest challenges for a project like this is finding the time to actually work on the bus (in between earning money to spend on the project, raising young children and all the usual responsibilities of running a family household). I’ve done a couple of nights lately working on the bus (quiet jobs only) and would probably do more if the bus wasn’t parked on the street! I often daydream about renting an industrial warehouse or a property on acreage to get the bus built. But for now, this is how we’re rolling!

We’ve owned Bronte the bus for one month now. In that time, the seats and bag racks have been removed. And now we’re busy planning the interior. I’ve measured the bus up and have been playing around with some online design tools. Sam and I have also marked out some design ideas in the bus with masking tape. The bus interior space measures 12 metres long by 2.4 metres wide, which includes the front door steps and driver’s area. As an empty shell, it looks like an incredible amount of space. But start mapping out the essential features for a family of four (beds, storage, shower/toilet, kitchen, couch, all-purpose table, and forward facing seats when travelling) and you soon realise how challenging the task is. We want to create a comfortable space that is functional but not cluttered or cramped. We want to maximise natural lighting with the existing windows and also ensure that all the top hopper windows (that open inwards) can be accessed. We’ve decided to remove some of the fixed glazing (bonded windows) and will replace with large sliding windows to improve ventilation and reduce interior temperatures. I will post some pics of the computer generated designs when complete.

Our family. Before bus life, we lived at a remote windswept lighthouse on an island off the coast of Queensland. Keiran was a park ranger and the unofficial caretaker of the heritage listed lighthouse precinct for five years. Our boys spent their days exploring the island, playing on wild and deserted beaches, and watching for whales from the lighthouse cliffs. It was a wonderful experience for our kids. After five years at the lighthouse, we found ourselves living back in the city. But we all missed the wide open space, the freedom and the strong connection with nature. We dreamed and planned. And eighteen months later, have just bought a bus! We seek to build upon that lighthouse experience with our new plans and can hardly wait to take that leap into the wild again!
