In between researching all the things for building the bus, building the bus, mediating Lego disputes, work and wrangling the domestic space, we’ve been refining our worldly possessions. It’s a process. A seemingly never ending one. Especially when you plan to live in a bus. Luckily, there’s an account for that! gently used, op shopped threads and things @littleearthmarket. A general progress report. Lots of work with insulation, windows and walls. We’re finally also getting started with building the furniture and it’s super exciting. This is the beginning of the main bedroom (queen bed and book shelves at rear). We’re planning to insulate under the bed (as it’s situated above the engine). The bus starter batteries have been removed for a good charge and the battery box treated for rust. We’ve also been busy online buying electrical components like power points (double pole), usb charging sockets and exterior sensor lights. We’re kind of all over the place but definitely moving in the right direction with the project. Bronte the bus waiting patiently for the big adventure. We’ve now installed six sliding windows and have been busy completing the wall insulation inside. We’ve also spent many hours waterproofing the exterior of the bus (it leaked like a sieve) and have applied a waterproof membrane around all glazing and body joints from the windows up. With rain falling since the waterproofing was applied, we’re calling it a success. There are no leaks in the bus anymore! On a side note, we’ve still got to apply some black automotive vinyl to the second last window to cover up the polystyrene insulation that’s inside.

Some good progress in the bus today! The nearside (left) wall is beginning to take shape. We tacked up the foil/foam insulation today. This thermal barrier will help to prevent heat from entering the bus through the wall frame. The next step will be to put up another layer of pine battens and then the 3mm plywood wall sheets can go on.

Night shift. We’re racing to get the final window done before predicted thunderstorms on New Year’s eve. We’ve removed six windows (large fixed glass panes) and are replacing with aluminium composite panel and rv sliding windows. We’ve also been busy ‘weather sealing’ the bus with a coat or two of a liquid flexible membrane. Got a few decent leaks to conquer!

The old and the new. Alice and Bronte the buses! If you look closely at Bronte, you will notice the completed windows on our new bus. Starting from the front door, the first window is original bus glass, the second window is aluminium composite panel with rv sliding window installed, the third window is original bus glass with black vinyl covering the lower section and the fourth window is another aluminium panel with rv sliding window installed.
Alice was my first bus conversion project (completed in 2003). I lived in Alice the bus at Uluru for many years before driving her back to Queensland. She’s 46 years old now and semi-retired. We use Alice as an office and guest accommodation in the side yard now. You can see more photos of Alice at @our.bus. ~ Keiran

Escaping the Brisbane heat yesterday! We found a perfect little swimming spot at Cedar Creek near Samford. The water was simply delightful! It’s the school holidays and I’m trying to find the balance between getting our bus conversion project done and creating a few adventures and experiences for the boys. They’ve been so patient with me and the time I’m putting into the bus (whilst Sam is away at work each day), so it was awesome to unwind and have a laugh together in the creek yesterday.

A productive day in the bus. Having removed two of the fixed windows earlier this week, we have now put in some timber framing in preparation for the replacement cladding (aluminium composite panel). We’ll then be inserting sliding windows into these new panels. It was another stormy day in Brisbane (hence the tarps over the window spaces this afternoon). You may also have noticed that we’ve swapped out the old school bus seats for some coach seats with lap sash belts (from an old Greyhound bus). Feels like we’re making good progress this week!

The joys of converting a bus during a tropical Queensland summer! One minute it was blue skies and I was happily painting window frames (we removed two large fixed windows this week) and the next minute… a midday storm and torrential downpour! I don’t mind. The recent heavy rains have been super helpful in showing me where the roof and window leaks are located!

We’ve completed our design of the floor plan in Bronte the bus. It’s very much a standard bus conversion layout (there’s only so many ways to build a house in a space like this). We have tried to maximise the available space for work, creativity, study and play. There’s a computer desk in the main bedroom and a breakfast bar that extends from the kitchen to the front of the bus, creating a long work bench area for all purposes (sitting or standing). The couch in the living area will have toy storage underneath, with the couch cushions removable to create a low table area for playing. A major design constraint were the top hopper windows that open inwards. To keep all windows available for use, we’ve had to align the floor plan carefully with these openings.
