The old and the new. Alice and Bronte the buses! If you look closely at Bronte, you will notice the completed windows on our new bus. Starting from the front door, the first window is original bus glass, the second window is aluminium composite panel with rv sliding window installed, the third window is original bus glass with black vinyl covering the lower section and the fourth window is another aluminium panel with rv sliding window installed. Alice was my first bus conversion project (completed in 2003). I lived in Alice the bus at Uluru for many years before driving her back to Queensland. She's 46 years old now and semi-retired. We use Alice as an office and guest accommodation in the side yard now. Escaping the Brisbane heat yesterday! We found a perfect little swimming spot at Cedar Creek near Samford. The water was simply delightful! It's the school holidays and I'm trying to find the balance between getting our bus conversion project done and creating a few adventures and experiences for the boys. Bronte the bus camped by the Goulburn River at Seymour. This was the day that I picked up the bus and started the 1800km journey back to Queensland. That was just over two months ago. We've been working whenever possible on the bus and are starting to see some good progress. The YouTube videos however have been a little slower to publish. I usually fall asleep at the laptop when trying to edit them at night! Anyway, I've nearly finished Episode Four. Stay tuned for an update! A productive day in the bus. Having removed two of the fixed windows earlier this week, we have now put in some timber framing in preparation for the replacement cladding (aluminium composite panel). We'll then be inserting sliding windows into these new panels. It was another stormy day in Brisbane (hence the tarps over the window spaces this afternoon). You may also have noticed that we've swapped out the old school bus seats for some coach seats with lap sash belts (from an old Greyhound bus). One minute it was blue skies and I was happily painting window frames (we removed two large fixed windows this week) and the next minute... a midday storm and torrential downpour! I don't mind. We've completed our design of the floor plan in Bronte the bus. It's very much a standard bus conversion layout (there's only so many ways to build a house in a space like this). We have tried to maximise the available space for work, creativity, study and play. There's a computer desk in the main bedroom and a breakfast bar that extends from the kitchen to the front of the bus, creating a long work bench area for all purposes (sitting or standing). The couch in the living area will have toy storage underneath, with the couch cushions removable to create a low table area for playing. A major design constraint were the top hopper windows that open inwards. To keep all windows available for use, we've had to align the floor plan carefully with these openings. Just waiting for the final coat of paint to dry on the frame around the window opening. Episode 3 – Tales From The Wild

We’re making little videos of our bus conversion project Tales From The Wild. Here’s Episode 3. The seats are out. The bag racks have been removed. The floor heaters are gone. We’ve started planning the layout. And removed one of the fixed windows, ready to install the first custom sliding window (we’re planning to add 4 or 5 of these).

Note: After initially planning to leave the ceiling alone (you’ll see that we actually started painted it in this video), we have since decided to rip the ceiling out and put some insulation in. It is just too hot in the bus for our liking (despite top hopper windows that open). To my dismay, I have discovered that the metal ceiling panels are not only riveted but glued to the framework above the window line (making the ceiling extra fun to remove). The rivets are no worries. But the glue has formed any incredibly strong bond between ceiling and frame (particularly one long bead above the windows). Has anyone got any tips for gaining the upper hand? I’m currently using hammer and chisel, stanley knife, multi-tool and reciprocating saw to try and prise the ceiling panels from the frame.

Burning the midnight oil in Bronte the bus. One of the greatest challenges for a project like this is finding the time to actually work on the bus (in between earning money to spend on the project, raising young children and all the usual responsibilities of running a family household). I've done a couple of nights lately working on the bus (quiet jobs only) and would probably do more if the bus wasn't parked on the street! I often daydream about renting an industrial warehouse or a property on acreage to get the bus built. We've owned Bronte the bus for one month now. In that time, the seats and bag racks have been removed. And now we're busy planning the interior. I've measured the bus up and have been playing around with some online design tools. Sam and I have also marked out some design ideas in the bus with masking tape. The bus interior space measures 12 metres long by 2.4 metres wide, which includes the front door steps and driver's area. As an empty shell, it looks like an incredible amount of space. But start mapping out the essential features for a family of four (beds, storage, shower/toilet, kitchen, couch, all-purpose table, and forward facing seats when travelling) and you soon realise how challenging the task is. We want to create a comfortable space that is functional but not cluttered or cramped. We want to maximise natural lighting with the existing windows and also ensure that all the top hopper windows (that open inwards) can be accessed. We've decided to remove some of the fixed glazing (bonded windows) and will replace with large sliding windows to improve ventilation and reduce interior temperatures. We’ve decided to remove some of the fixed glazing (bonded windows) and will replace with large sliding windows to improve ventilation and reduce interior temperatures. I will post some pics of the computer generated designs when complete.

Sunday was spent hanging out at Port Welshpool with a caravanning cousin and family. Set up just metres from the water and basking in some much needed sunshine (it's been cold down here), it was exciting to think that we'll be doing a lot more of this when our house on wheels is built!
