We’re an Australian family currently converting our 1998 school bus into a house on wheels. In this episode, we take a look at our floor plans, and our progress with the installation of windows and insulation in the bus.
The old and the new. Alice and Bronte the buses! If you look closely at Bronte, you will notice the completed windows on our new bus. Starting from the front door, the first window is original bus glass, the second window is aluminium composite panel with rv sliding window installed, the third window is original bus glass with black vinyl covering the lower section and the fourth window is another aluminium panel with rv sliding window installed.
Alice was my first bus conversion project (completed in 2003). I lived in Alice the bus at Uluru for many years before driving her back to Queensland. She’s 46 years old now and semi-retired. We use Alice as an office and guest accommodation in the side yard now. You can see more photos of Alice at @our.bus. ~ Keiran

Sunset reflections and new windows on Bronte the bus. So. We are replacing a handful of fixed glass panes with 3mm aluminium composite panel (gloss black) and then cutting a hole in each panel to fit a new sliding window. We’re pretty happy with the results so far! Two windows done, three to go.

We’ve installed another sliding window in the bus! Two down, four to go. The insulation and walls are also coming along nicely. We’re hoping to have the windows, walls and insulation done within the next two weeks.

Bronte the bus camped by the Goulburn River at Seymour. This was the day that I picked up the bus and started the 1800km journey back to Queensland. That was just over two months ago. We’ve been working whenever possible on the bus and are starting to see some good progress. The YouTube videos however have been a little slower to publish. I usually fall asleep at the laptop when trying to edit them at night! Anyway, I’ve nearly finished Episode Four. Stay tuned for an update! Keiran

We’ve completed our design of the floor plan in Bronte the bus. It’s very much a standard bus conversion layout (there’s only so many ways to build a house in a space like this). We have tried to maximise the available space for work, creativity, study and play. There’s a computer desk in the main bedroom and a breakfast bar that extends from the kitchen to the front of the bus, creating a long work bench area for all purposes (sitting or standing). The couch in the living area will have toy storage underneath, with the couch cushions removable to create a low table area for playing. A major design constraint were the top hopper windows that open inwards. To keep all windows available for use, we’ve had to align the floor plan carefully with these openings. The work crew in action this morning. After a few days of rain, the sun is shining again today. We’re hoping to get the first sliding window fitted before the forecast rain arrives over the weekend. Just waiting for the final coat of paint to dry on the frame around the window opening. And then we’re ready to glue the new window in!
